District Governor's Letter to the Rotarians of District 5690
__________________________________________________________
Dear Fellow Rotarians:
In January of 2011, as the Governor Elect of our District, I had the privilege of participating in our International Assembly.
This event is the final step in a 2-½ year training process for future Governors. Imagine sitting in a meeting room with 534 other DGEs from literally every continent... yes, there IS a Rotary Club in Antarctica! During the week we were thoroughly briefed on the great work we are carrying out around the world... Polio eradication, clean water, peacemaking, reconstruction after disasters, and on and on. It seemed as if the list was endless.
But interestingly enough, when we broke into small groups, much of what we got excited about was local... those often small, personal, one-on-one things that Rotary Clubs do in their local community.
So as the week went on, I was filled more and more with a profound gratitude... thankfulness that I had the privilege of being part of an unparalleled organization, that has the muscle, financial strength and staying power to tackle projects on a massive scale, like national immunization days. But at the same time, thankfulness that I could literally reach out and touch the students at a local elementary school adopted by my Club back home as we build and distribute bookshelves to them, grill hot dogs for a special springtime lunch treat, and support their multi-cultural activities.
Every one of us sees the Rotary World from our own perspective, I am sure. But I truly hope that, as you read these words, you consider the theme created for us by RI President Kalyan Banerjee, "Reach Within to Embrace Humanity." At the same time as you deservedly take pride in your membership in Rotary, may your actions be a reflection of the motivation that springs from deep within you and makes connections with those in need, be they at home or very far away.
