Leadership In Action

Some people may define a leader as one who mediates and is in charge of a group or activity. However, a true leader is a servant first. This year’s SC/Rotary Leadership Camp theme, Step up to the Challenge. Become the Change, encompasses the responsibility of being a servant leader. The camp was held May 29-June 2, 2010, on the Southwestern College campus. Participating youth learned about themselves and others, about motivation and teamwork. They discovered that they can’t be a leader without being a servant first.

What will we do?

The week will be filled with both physical and mental leadership-building and motivational activities.

You’ll work with other students in projects that will give you experience in teamwork, from a
ropes course to a work project.
You’ll talk about career planning and about setting goals.
You’ll set goals to help make a difference in your school.
And we’ll make sure you have plenty of fun. Special events: dodgeball, a cookout, mud
volleyball, swimming, ice cream, and more!

If you don't know anyone from a Rotary Club, call your Chamber of Commerce, or call Southwestern College, 1-800-846-1581, ext. 6381 and they will put you in touch with someone. By the end of the week, the campers will have broadened their perception of leaders as position holders to leaders as partners with followers in efforts for positive change" says Cheryl Rude, director of Leadership Southwestern. "The camp also gives them opportunities for service above self, which is the theme of Rotary."

This is the 15th year that Rotary and Leadership Southwestern have teamed up to put on the camp. Dean Kennedy, district chairman for RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Awards), says Rotary and Leadership Southwestern are a good team.

The camp is for students who have completed ninth grade but not yet graduated high school.

Other highlights for the campers were playing mud volleyball, leadership workshops and going to the ropes course.
